About Palouse Hills Driving Academy

Building Safer Drivers for Life

Founded in 2024, Palouse Hills Driving Academy (PHDA) was established with one purpose: to create safer, more confident, and more responsible drivers. While earning a driver's license is an important milestone, we believe the true goal of driver's education is preparing students to make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel.

At PHDA, safety isn't just part of our curriculum - it is the foundation of everything we do.

Owned and operated by Dan Brown and Bryce Nebe, Palouse Hills Driving Academy brings more than 50 years of combined law enforcement experience to the classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. Throughout their careers, they have investigated serious traffic collisions, enforced traffic laws, educated the public on roadway safety, and witnessed firsthand the life-changing consequences of poor driving decisions.

That real-world experience provides students with an educational advantage that extends far beyond learning the rules of the road.

Serving the Palouse

Our main office is located in Colfax, Washington, and we proudly serve students throughout Whitman County and the surrounding Palouse region

We understand that today's families need flexibility, which is why we offer both traditional in-person classroom instruction and live virtual (Zoom) classroom sessions. Students receive the same high-quality instruction regardless of the learning format they choose, allowing families to find a schedule that best fits their needs.

We believe driver's education should adapt to the needs of our community while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and safety.

The PHDA Difference

At Palouse Hills Driving Academy, we believe earning a driver's license is only the beginning. Our mission is to develop drivers who will remain safe, confident, and responsible for a lifetime.

What makes PHDA different is our unique combination of real-world law enforcement experience, evidence-based instruction, modern training technology, and a genuine commitment to student success.

Our instructors have spent decades responding to collisions, investigating crashes, enforcing traffic laws, and educating the public on roadway safety. That experience gives us a perspective few driving schools can offer. We understand not only what causes crashes—but more importantly, how they can be prevented.

Rather than simply teaching students how to pass the Washington State driving test, we teach them how to:

  • Think ahead and anticipate hazards before they become emergencies.
  • Recognize distracted, impaired, fatigued, and aggressive drivers.
  • Develop defensive driving habits that significantly reduce risk.
  • Make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Drive safely in rural communities, city traffic, highways, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Understand that driving is one of the greatest responsibilities they will have.

Every lesson is designed to help students become proactive, defensive drivers who are prepared for real-world situations, not just the driving test.

Driven by Data. Focused on Safety.

Traffic safety is constantly evolving, and driver education should evolve with it.

At PHDA, we rely on current traffic safety research, crash statistics, and proven instructional methods to continually improve our curriculum. We carefully examine the leading causes of crashes involving new drivers and use that information to shape our classroom discussions and behind-the-wheel lessons.

Rather than relying solely on tradition, we believe in teaching what the data shows keeps drivers safest.

By combining decades of practical law enforcement experience with evidence-based driver education, we prepare students to identify risks early, make smart decisions, and avoid dangerous situations before they occur.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple:

  • Create risk-aware, defensive drivers who make safe decisions for life.
  • Safety Is Our Number One Priority
  • Everything we do begins and ends with safety.

Our Vehicles

Our training fleet consists of modern, well-maintained vehicles specifically equipped for professional driver education. Every vehicle is highly visible and clearly marked, helping create a safe learning environment for students and other motorists alike.

Each training vehicle includes:

  • Passenger-side instructor brake and accelerator controls.
  • Additional instructor mirrors for improved visibility.
  • Interior and exterior video recording systems that promote accountability, enhance instruction, and improve safety.
  • Modern safety equipment and routine maintenance inspections.

These features allow our instructors to intervene immediately when necessary while giving students the confidence to learn in a controlled and secure environment.

Experienced Instructors Who Care

At Palouse Hills Driving Academy, our instructors are more than licensed driving instructors - they are experienced professionals with extensive law enforcement or first responder backgrounds who are passionate about helping young drivers succeed.

We recognize that every student learns differently. Some students are excited to drive, while others may be nervous or lack confidence. Our instructors are patient, encouraging, and committed to creating a positive learning environment where students can grow at their own pace.

We don't just teach students to drive.

We teach them to think.

We teach them to recognize risk.

We teach them to make good decisions.

Most importantly, we teach them how to protect themselves, their passengers, and everyone else sharing the roadway.

Our Commitment to Every Student

Parents place an incredible amount of trust in us when they choose Palouse Hills Driving Academy, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Our success is not measured simply by how many students earn their driver's license. Our success is measured by how many students leave our program with the confidence, judgment, and skills to safely navigate the road for years to come.

We are committed to continually improving our curriculum, embracing new technology, and adapting our instruction to meet the changing needs of today's drivers while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.
